COLLEGE SPEECH CONTEST

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

 

Q: Who is eligible to participate:
A:
Students who are residents of the State of Michigan and who provide proof of their enrollment in college.

Q: When is the contest?
A:
Saturday, May 19th commencing at 10:00 AM:  Grace Presbyterian Church, 1084 N. Irish Rd., Davison, MI (Just north off I 69 on your right)

Q: Where can students obtain resource materials for their chosen topics?
A:
There are many good web sites on the Internet and the Flint Right to Life resource center has information.

Q. What are the rules concerning speeches?
A.
Contestants are to research, write and present an original pro-life speech on:

  • Abortion, Euthanasia, Morning After Pill, RU486 Pills, Breast Cancer/Abortion Connection, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Black Genocide

Judging criteria includes: Introduction, content, presentation, conclusion, and judges’ overall opinion.

Because the speech is to be an oration, appropriate gestures are allowed. The style and speech type should be appropriate to the message, but the speech must not be a dramatic presentation (i.e. portrayal of baby in the womb, displaying a photograph, etc.) Quotes are fine but should not dominate the speech. Props are not permitted.

Speeches are to be 5-7 minutes. Disqualification may occur if the speech is under 4, or over 8, minutes; this is left to the judges’ discretion during final tallying.

When using statistics, contestants should be sure to use the most current information available.

Q: What are the prizes?
A:
First Place - $1000; Second Place - $750; & Third Place - $500.

Q: Must speeches be memorized?
A:
Though encouraged, memorization is not required, and it is acceptable for contestants to use notes or refer to their written speeches if necessary.
